HERSHOES

Starting out barefoot on first entry world.
No need for support, let those legs, ankles and toes be free,
She was carried around ofttimes by those who loved her,
Then she began to stumble around the table holding on,
Getting her bearings, learning to balance, standing alone.
Then one day her feet touched the soft grass.
Connecting to earth was electrifying, to the point where,
She pulled back, as earth’s grounding effect was calming.
Walking on the sand underneath her feet, cool grainy-ness,
sifting through toes, a wonderful, carefree sensation.
The day came when those feet were no longer free.
Now learning to walk in these weighted, heavy things,
The feeling was clumsy, encumbered, gait changed,
Why does she need them? Walking barefoot was fine.
No longer enjoying freedom bare feet bring.
No longer running free,
No longer feeling earth’s beauty,
Whose idea was this anyway?
It’s for protection that allows for walking on anything,
but there is less comfort when they’re on,
Alas, only wear them in urban settings:
High heels, for the office;
Tennis, for the calves;
Sandals, for summer breezes;
Boots, for stomping; and
Loafers, for ease of living.
Her Shoes, taxing but necessary for all life’s transitions.
